The piece
A sun, in cedar and formline.
In Northwest Coast art the sun is one of the great figures, carved on masks, panels and poles along the coast. What a crest means belongs to the families who hold it, and it differs from nation to nation, so the story of this Sun is Ross's to tell.
The face sits at the centre, ringed in formline: the flowing black primary line, the red secondary line, the ovoids and U-forms that give Northwest Coast art its rhythm. Every line was drawn by hand before the first cut and painted with a fine brush after the last.
